A little later in the year than usual Apple has officially announced its 2020 flagship iPhone; the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini (the first ever ‘mini’ model), Pro and Pro Max.

Featuring support of the 5G network across all models, the new design has flat squared off edges reminiscent of the iPhone 4. This is the first major redesign for Apple’s full screen smart phone since the iPhone X in 2017 where it introduced a bezel-less design.

This new design comes in a range of fresh colours in an aluminium finish (which is like a high end take on the approach with the iPhone 5C in 2013); the 12 and 12 Mini will be available in five different colours; blue, green, white, black and Product RED. Whilst the 12 Pro and Pro Max are to launch in; black, blue, gold and white.

The new ceramic shield glass used on the front of the phone is a welcome addition for added screen protection with 4 x better drop performance.

The iPhone 12 Pro models will feature an A14 bionic chip; the fastest chip ever to be in a smartphone (this chip was first introduced in the new iPad Air last month).

Apple states that the new Six Core CPU and the Four Core GPU are the fastest ever and that its performance speed is up to 50% faster than any other phone on the market.

As with the 11 Series, Apple is again offering a triple camera system on both the 12 Pro and Pro Max with a 12 MegaPixel wide telephoto and ultra wide camera lens. The wide camera now offers a faster F/16 aperture which Apple says offers a 27% improvement on ‘low-light’ performance. For all aspiring photographers out there, Apple is teasing us with a new feature called Apple ProRAW which will be available on the 12 Pro and Pro Max later this year.

All the new iPhone models will be compatible with Apple’s newly announced MagSafe wireless charger accessories. This offers magnetically attached cases, charging pads and other ‘wallet style’ attachments. As anticipated in a previous blog post, this means that upon unboxing their new device users will not receive the usual wall charger or lightning EarPods.

Pricing and Ordering

The iPhone 12 Pro will start at £999, the Pro Max will start at £1099 with 128GB, 256GB and the 512GB storage options.

Pre-orders for the Pro will start from 16th October 2020 at 1pm (UK) and will ship a week later on October 23rd.

Pre-orders for the Pro Max will start from 6th November 2020  (UK) and will ship a week later on November 13th.

My initial thoughts are that this model needs to be examined in person to appreciate its modern-retro design and advanced technology truly. However, I’m not sure what other improvements Apple could offer us besides from camera, battery, speed, screen etc, which is something that they focus their attention on each year. And, the same applies to other mobile phone manufacturers too.

Having said that I’d probably be upgrading my handset soon just like you guys will!
